Hi Kathryn: Actually next time I meet with them to talk about CloudComputing I plan on running this idea by them. I think one of the important things though is to get buy in from the heads of IT at different institutions. Once they see the benefits of the cloud, they might drink the kool-aid.

Hi Rosalyn: Do you know whether NITLE is doing any work on the private cloud idea? They seem to me to be the resource for us to turn to in this instance.

Thank Stephen.

I guess I was using the term private cloud in the strict sense of the word. Most likely the consortias will contract with providers to run the cloud.

NITLE actually already does this for some of its services. It’ll contract with a provider and they are the intermediary that helps keep costs down. Although it might be possible for NITLE (and other consortias) to contract with a cloud provider and do their own self service stuff with the cloud.

@Christofer Hoff Thanks Chris for the vote of confidence. An organization that I'm a member of NITLE has Technology Fellows. I wrote another post on this a while back and I'm hoping a meeting I have tomorrow will solidify what it is that I'll be teaching people.

I’ll second Hoff: It was great to meet you and hear your ideas.

The concept of a special educational cloud is a great one. The US Government is doing something similar, actually. But why make it a private cloud? The GSA is looking at public providers behind a controlled interface. Couldn’t education do the same?

Firstly, it was great to meet you!

Secondly, you’re pretty darned smart yourself…that interop session you did a great job of the portability v. interoperability issues and I totally got what you meant. I was *trying* to articulate the things you said about Simon’s preso, so hopefully I helped and didn’t hinder.

What is this “Cloud Computing Fellowship” you refer to?
